I don't show as much as I did, due to job and time constraints. And usually when I go to a national specialty, I don't take any of my own dogs, since as a fancier of the breed, I like to be free to observe what other breeders have been producing over the last year. Bringing a string of dogs to show... you just don't have the time to do that all important research.

I don't have a kennel full of dogs. My Curlies live in the home with us. That is why I sometimes lease back a prospective mom to have a litter. This helps diversify my bloodlines, and takes away a common trap some breeders fall into, by only breeding the dogs they have in their kennel. I want to be able to give each dog at SoftMaple individual attention, time and training. Our breeding program is the same. I have an average of 2 litters a year. I don't believe in churning out sub quality pups just to meet a demand. Breeding is about trying to improve upon a particular dog or line of dogs, or trying to preserve some quality traits.

You need to evaluate each dog and each past litter in order to make informed choices for future breedings. Breeding many dogs may get the breeder more awards, but conscientious breeding isn't about awards. Breeding Curly Coated Retrievers should be done selectively with emphasis placed on producing good health, sound temperament, correct conformation, working ability, and other outstanding characteristics of the breed.
